Message from the president

Dear Friends,

I am honoured and privileged to assume as the President of the Sri Lanka College of Oncologists (SLCO) and really thankful to all the members of the college. During my presidential year, I am sure we need to face the prevailing difficult circumstances due to the COVID-19 pandemic and we all have to devise together a suitable alternative plan to meet the challenges ahead of us.

The SLCO is a nationally and internally recognized academic body with more than 100 life members of clinical oncologists, surgical oncologists and gynaecological oncologists. The SLCO being a member of SFO (SAARC Federation of Oncologist) and FARO (Federation of Asian Organizations for Radiation Oncology), could exchange knowledge and expertise beyond the borders with virtual communications among membership in improving patient care, continuing medical education and networking among many professionals in the world.

The SLCO will continue to work with relevant stake holder to formulate the National Guidelines for the management of various cancers, registration & evaluation of oncological drugs with emphasis on quality and safety in a transparent manner.

In addition, the SLCO will continue to persuade the Ministry of Health to expedite accomplishing the cabinet approved project on “High Quality Radiotherapy with High Energy Radiation for Cancer Patients” in the year 2021-22. It is also high time to initiate facilitating reasonable access to radiotherapy services for all clinical oncologists with the introduction of technology so that to offer quality radiotherapy treatment to more cancer patients in this country.

During the tenure of this new council we also have a plan to form a “Young Oncologists’ Forum” within the college, with the aim of providing many opportunities to strengthen young oncologists’ knowledge, skills, research & innovative expertise and to have a platform for networking with their counterparts worldwide.

It is also our dream to build a “College House” by acquiring a suitable land with the help of the Government or from generous donors. The biggest challenge of achieving success in accomplishing our goals would not be difficult if we all work together with our partners locally and internationally with full commitment.

I look forward to working with all medical professional to offer a multi-disciplinary approach of quality medical care to all the citizens of this country.

Thank you

Dr.A.J.Hilmi
