Cancer Awareness Month:
Information, Research, Patient Services, Advocacy
Message from the president
I feel much honoured to send this message as president of the Sri Lanka College of
oncologists for this new norm event of Virtual Annual Academic Session 2020.
SLCO was able to continue its activities while giving all the support to maintain the
standard cancer care to our patients by preparing guidelines for COVID -19 challenging
period and supplying protective materials to continue uninterrupted treatments while
safeguarding our cancer care teams all over the island.
Our theme here is “Conquering Challenges through Frugal Innovation”. This programme has got many eminent local and international speakers to cover wide range of specialties to encourage and enhance our knowledge to serve our patients with best care.
History reveals most of the innovations, discoveries came up after a dark, difficult time spaces. Successful changes and turns occurred during special time gaps. So this special time space we are spending now would be an ideal time for our departmental reviews, arrangements for audits and simple studies which may reveal better pathways.
Amid this challenging period of the whole globe, with physical lock downs enforcing locally and internationally adapting to the COVID 19 situation our organizing committee and the council members specially Dr Devinda Jayathilake, Dr Sanjeewa Gunasekara and Dr Nurad Joseph worked with great spirit and courage to make this session a reality. I greatly appreciate them for bringing a novel experience to our membership.
I wish all participants a very fruitful meeting and a great experience.
Dr. Kanthi Perera
